Towards a Cultural Eurocity: Sustainable Tourism, History, Heritage and Culture

The Eurocity of the Guadiana has a rich cultural, historical and natural heritage. From border fortresses and popular traditions to landscapes of marshes and riverbanks, its identity is built on centuries of exchanges, conflicts and encounters between communities on both sides of the river.

The Pilot Project Living Identity seeks to consolidate that wealth in a sustainable and innovative tourist destinationwhich integrates tangible and intangible heritage with quality cultural experiences. To this end, it relies on the Guadiana Eurocity Museum TerritoryIt complements it with tangible actions to improve infrastructures, signposting and interpretation areas.

With this, the Eurocity will be able to offer residents and visitors a coherent, accessible and differential experience, in line with European sustainable tourism strategies and with the enhancement of heritage as a driver of territorial development. Three sub-projects are born from this action, which are structured as follows Living Identity:

V01. Museum Territory 2.0
V02. Cross-border identity
V03. Spaces for interpretation

V01. Museum Territory 2.0

The Guadiana Eurocity Museum Territory has created a unique cross-border story through eight routes that invite visitors to explore shared fortresses, marshes, festivals, arts and traditions. However, the initiative has developed mainly on a narrative and promotional level.

This sub-project proposes an evolution towards Museum Territory 2.0incorporating physical and tangible interventions to reinforce existing routes: recovery and improvement of sections of paths, creation of rest areas and interpretative panels, adaptation of accesses to heritage sites, and incorporation of homogeneous signposting on all routes.

The action will enable the eight Museum Territory routes to become complete, competitive tourism products that can be financed by European heritage and cultural tourism programmes.

V02. Cross-border identity of the Eurocity

One of the main obstacles detected in the diagnosis is the dispersion and unevenness of signage on the Eurocity's tourist routes. The proposal is to implement a unified system of cross-border, bilingual (Portuguese/Spanish) and accessible signageThe aim is to facilitate orientation and understanding of the heritage resources.

This system will include homogeneous physical signage on trails, cycle tourism routes and heritage sites, and will be complemented with digital solutions (QR codes, audio guides, interactive maps) to reinforce the experience.

V03. Spaces for interpretation

The landscape of the Guadiana and the marshes is a first class tourist and environmental resource. This subproject proposes the creation of a network of cross-border viewpoints and interpretation areaslinked to the Museum Territory routes.

The viewpoints will allow bird watching, the contemplation of the river landscape and the interpretation of the heritage and natural values of the surroundings, integrating cultural, environmental and tourist contents. Some strategic points would be the mouth of the Guadiana, the Castro Marim salt marshes, the Ayamonte estuary and the Monte Gordo area.
