The Eurocity of Guadiana
A European project for border regions
The Eurociudad del Guadiana EGTC is an area of cross-border cooperation made up of the municipalities of Ayamonte (Spain), Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal). Its aim is to promote the social, economic, cultural and environmental integration of both sides of the Guadiana River, strengthening the common identity and improving the quality of life of its inhabitants.
The Eurocity is conceived as a shared territory where public policies, projects and services are coordinated, becoming a benchmark for Iberian and European collaboration.
Resilient Borders
Resilient Borders - Resilient Borders is a European initiative that supports border regions to become more resilient and competitive through joint plans and projects that transcend national borders. COVID-19 and the climate challenges demonstrated the need for coordinated responses in cross-border territories.
With funding from the European Commission, 20 pilot actions have been launched with two main objectives: to improve crisis preparedness through joint plans and to strengthen shared territorial planning, promoting cross-border services, infrastructure and governance models.
Promoted by the European Commission and managed by the AEBR and the MOTThe project promotes shared public services, joint investment in infrastructure and a stable commitment to cooperation. Its goal is to transform borders into spaces of opportunity that are more liveable, cohesive and ready for common challenges.
Within this framework, the Eurocity is developing the Pilot Action SP-7focusing on the Sustainable Territorial Planning 2030The strategic lines of action in mobility, territorial planning, sustainability, culture and services have emerged from it.
The Eurocity of Guadiana participates in Resilient Borders alongside an ecosystem of European, national and regional institutions supporting cross-border cooperation. These include the European Union (co-financier), the AEBR/AEBR and the MOTThe project is supported by the local administrations of Ayamonte, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António.
