The Eurocity of Guadiana shares experiences in the New Aquitaine Euroregion

The Guadiana Eurocity's Urban and Regional Planning Working Group recently visited the New Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarre Euroregion with the aim of learning first-hand about experiences in territorial planning and cross-border cooperation.

The delegation, led by the vice-presidents of the Eurocity, Alberto Fernández and Filomena Sintra, was composed of the technical team of the EGTC and professionals from the departments of Urbanism of Ayamonte, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António.

During the visit, key issues such as sustainable mobility between neighbouring countries, the creation of territorial observatories, the management of shared citizenship projects and territorial cohesion strategies were addressed. Meetings were also held with public bodies and agents involved in key cross-border projects.

The programme included a meeting in San Sebastian with the Basque Government's Deputy Minister of Infrastructures and Sustainable Mobility, Miguel Ángel Páez, and the Director General of the Gipuzkoa Transport Authority, Elusca Renedo, who presented pioneering cross-border and intermodal public transport initiatives. The delegation also visited local experiences in the "cross-border life basins" of Hendaye-Irun and Xareta, where they were able to learn first-hand about models of municipal collaboration on both sides of the border.

The visit, organised in coordination with the New Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarre Euroregion, is part of the project Resilient Borders - Resilient Bordersfunded by the European Commission, the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and the Cross Border Operational Mission (MOT).

Thanks to this initiative, the Eurocity of Guadiana is making progress in the elaboration of a joint strategic territorial planning document, within the action piloto SP-7. Sustainable Territorial Planning 2030which seeks to lay the foundations for a shared model of balanced and sustainable development.
